After a big storm rolled through last year, I started wondering if the windows in my home could actually stand up to hurricane-force winds. I’d heard about impact windows, but I wasn’t sure if mine qualified.

If you’ve ever asked yourself, “how can I tell if my windows are impact resistant?”, you’re not alone. It’s an important question especially if you live in a hurricane-prone area or just want to feel safer at home.

In this quick guide, I’ll walk you through the easiest ways to check if your windows are impact rated, and what to do if they’re not.

Look for a Permanent Mark or Etching on the Glass

Most impact-resistant windows will have a label or etched mark in one of the corners of the glass. It usually shows:

  • The manufacturer
  • Glass type
  • Certification info (like “Laminated Glass” or “ASTM E1996”)
  • Safety codes or model numbers

If you see words like “tempered” or “laminated” along with a code or impact rating, that’s a good sign.

Don’t see any markings? No problem, keep reading.

Check for a Label on the Window Frame

Some manufacturers place labels or certification stickers on the inside of the window frame (usually near the bottom). Look for:

  • Impact-resistance ratings
  • Design pressure (DP) ratings
  • Miami-Dade County approval codes (if in Florida)

Miami-Dade approved windows are considered some of the strongest in the U.S so if you spot that label, you’re in great shape.

Tap the Glass Does It Feel Different?

This trick isn’t foolproof, but it can help. Gently tap the glass with your knuckle.

  • Standard single-pane glass sounds thin and hollow.
  • Impact glass feels solid and heavy. It may even have a slight “dull” sound because of the laminated layers inside.

Again, this method works best when combined with label checks but it’s a quick way to get a feel for your window type.

Call the Manufacturer or Check the Model Number

If you can find the window brand and model number (often stamped or stickered on the frame), try searching the info online. Many manufacturers list detailed specs, including whether a window is impact-rated.

Or, better yet call the company and ask directly. They’ll be able to confirm it for you.

Still Not Sure? Have a Pro Inspect Them

If you’re unsure or just want peace of mind the best option is to have a licensed window expert inspect them. They can:

  • Confirm if your windows are impact-rated
  • Identify any weak points
  • Recommend upgrades or replacements if needed

This is especially smart if you just moved into a home or live near the coast where storms are a concern.

Why It Matters: Safety, Insurance, and Energy Savings

Impact-resistant windows aren’t just about surviving hurricanes. They also:

  • Block break-ins better than standard glass
  • Reduce outside noise
  • Improve energy efficiency
  • May lower your homeowner’s insurance (big bonus)

So even if you don’t live in a hurricane zone, upgrading to impact windows can still be a smart move.
